Spring - New life

"Blåveis" in Asker, Norway (Photo: Norwegianblogger April 2006)

Today it's raining and it's cold, but yesterday was a great day here in Southern Norway. I visited my sister and her family in Asker Friday and Saturday and we had a wonderful time at one of the beaches in Asker. We had a fire, played cards and spent hours in the sun. There was still some snow here and there, but suddenly we came to a place with a lot of flowers called "Blåveis" in Norwegian (I don't know the English name). That flower is one of the first signs of spring here in Norway, and it was great seeing it once more. It's reassuring to see that there's new life - in 2006 as well. Spring is here - and it's more than welcome!

Liverleaf is the english name for the flowers in your picture. blåveis is a much more appropriate name for the flower. Especially with blå being the color of them. They are not the color of livers, but perhaps someone thought the leaves of the plant are the same shape as a liver. Anyway, it has been fun to read your blog and brush up on my scandinavian language studies.

Thanks Jen. Liverleaf - hmmm, not the best name for such a beautiful flower is it? Anyway, thanks for your entry and I hope you'll enjoy the Scandinavian languages in the future as well!

Blåveis is often mistranslated into English as Blue Anemone. It's really "liverwort" or liverleaf, Hepatica family. Beautiful photo!
